Historical Facts

FROM THE NORTH GEORGIA MOUNTAINS to the Chattahoochee River along a Cherokee Indian trail, a tiny village named New Prospect Camp Ground was formed. This village, made up of tents, a log school, and arbor became a trading post where Indians and white settlers exchanged their goods. The surrounding countryside provided excellent farming land, especially for cotton. On December 11, 1858, the town was chartered and became the county seat of Milton County. The town was renamed Alpharetta from the Greek words "alpha" meaning first and "retta" meaning town. In 1932, Milton County was merged into Fulton County.

ABOUT OUR SCHOOL

Cogburn Woods opened in August 2004 as one of Fulton County's newest elementary schools. Located in Alpharetta, Cogburn Woods’ population is comprised of students formerly from Manning Oaks, Alpharetta, and Summit Hill elementary schools.

Our philosophy is based on meeting the needs of the total child. We are concerned with all areas of development --academic, social, physical and emotional. While our focus is on increasing student achievement, this is not at the exclusion of children’s social, physical or emotional well-being.

We are committed to providing a nurturing, safe, learning environment for all children. Every decision we make will be based on what is best for all children. We want our students to know that they are cared for and listened to and that there is no problem so great that it cannot be solved.

Our goals are four-fold:

  • Ensure that all children will achieve to their fullest potential in a safe, nurturing environment.
  • Enhance the development of each child’s self esteem so that the child views himself as a person of worth and dignity.
  • Make each child’s educational experiences pleasant and success oriented so that the child develops an enthusiasm and love for life long learning.
  • Foster a collaborative, respectful relationship between children, families, staff and community.

ABOUT OUR SCHOOL

The mission of Fulton Science Academy Middle School is to execute the instruction of the middle school math-science curriculum with the help of proven successful methods in a stimulating and supporting environment.

In the search for a reform to improve mathematics and science teaching, the community and the educators who are committed to establishing Fulton Science Academy (FSA) Middle School decided to adopt The Connected Mathematics Project (CMP) and The Foundational Approaches in Science Teaching (FAST) models for math and science teaching at FSA Middle School. Both of these programs are identified as "exemplary" by the U.S. Department of Education.

FSA Middle School also provides all of the middle school courses currently being offered in other Fulton County Schools, such as language arts, social studies, art, PE, etc. Fulton County curriculum is followed in these fields.

For a middle school, learning should always be accompanied with exploration. Therefore, FSA Middle School strives to provide as many opportunities as possible for the students to gain extra experiences. Field trips, sports activities, band, and chorus groups, and after-school enrichment programs are a few of the many possibilities FSA Middle School provides.

ABOUT OUR SCHOOL

Milton High School was originally founded as Milton County High School in 1921 but now is part of the Fulton County School System. In 2005, a new building was constructed on Birmingham Highway, replacing the 84-year-old structure on School Drive. The historic old school has been converted into administrative offices and space for other school system programs.

The new school, located adjacent to Northwestern Middle School, offers students a program of instruction tailored to their career interests within smaller, more personalized learning communities or "academies". Ninth graders begin in a freshman academy where they receive their core academics. Ninth grade is a transitional year in which students will learn to increase their study skills, explore and assess their interests and begin to narrow career options.

About midway through the freshman year, ninth graders are asked to select a curriculum area in which they will focus their studies -- from either a Humanities Academy, a Social Sciences Academy, or a Math and Science Academy -- beginning with their sophomore year. Their choice should be related to their interests, special talents and possible future career directions. Though every student will receive the same core academic curriculum, courses will be taught from different perspectives based upon the academy selected.

SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT: The Milton High School community provides a safe, supportive and challenging learning environment which fosters academic and personal excellence for all students as they prepare to succeed in the 21st century.

Alpharetta Businesses and Economy

More than 3,600 businesses currently enjoy the Alpharetta advantage. From the corporate campuses of global leaders to small, family-owned shops, these businesses have enjoyed strong returns on their Alpharetta investments.

Today Alpharetta’s businesses employ in excess of 120,000 people, more than three times The City’s total population. The vast majority of these jobs have been created since the opening of North Point Mall in 1993; in fact, almost 70,000 jobs were created in the past five years alone. That is quite an impressive record for what was, in 1980, just a sleepy little town of 3,000 people.

In recent years Alpharetta has been catapulted into the national spotlight by publications such as USA Today and Yahoo! Internet Life as one of the leading locations for technology-focused businesses. In the heart of the largest fiber-linked network in the United States; just minutes away from one of the world’s busiest airports, Atlanta Hartsfield International; and providing easy access to cutting-edge research universities, Alpharetta is the ideal location for companies on the forefront of the modern economy.

From large to small, from entrepreneur to established global corporation, businesses of every shape and size are discovering the Alpharetta advantage. Our quaint downtown and executive neighborhoods invite, our corporate centers and plush amenities excite, and the Alpharetta Team is ready to help you realize your business potential!
